Best time to visit Rainbow Mountain

The best time to visit Rainbow Mountain is during the dry season (April to October). During these months, the skies are usually clear and the vibrant colours of the mountain are most visible, especially in the early mornings when the light falls directly on the slopes. June to September sees the least rain, but also the most visitors. The wet season (November to March) brings frequent rain and cloud cover, which can obscure the views and make the trail muddy and slippery, making it less ideal for hiking.

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is it to climb Rainbow Mountain?
The hike is moderately difficult due to the high altitude rather than the distance. The trail itself is only 3-4 kilometres one way, but the altitude (up to 5,036 metres) can make it difficult to breathe. Those who are reasonably fit and well acclimatised to the altitude of Cuzco (3,399m) usually complete the route without problems.
Can I hire a horse if I can't walk all the way?
Yes, horses can be hired at the starting point and along the route. Prices range from US$15-20 each way. Please note that horses cannot go all the way to the top - there is a short but steep final stretch that must be done on foot.
What happens if I feel unwell because of the altitude?
Your guide carries basic first aid and an oxygen tank. Mild symptoms such as headache and fatigue are common. You will be encouraged to take breaks, hydrate and chew coca leaves. In case of severe symptoms, you can descend or use the horse service to return earlier.
Is Red Valley worth enlarging?
Of course, if you have the energy. The Red Valley offers spectacular, Martian-like scenery and far fewer people. It adds about 1 hour to the hike. Ask your guide at the summit if conditions and your energy levels are suitable to add this route.
What should I wear for the visit?
Dress in layers. Mornings are chilly (down to 0°C), but it warms up quickly. Take a thermal inner layer, a fleece or jacket and a windproof outer layer. Don't forget gloves, a hat and good hiking boots. Sunglasses and sun protection are essential due to the intense high-altitude sun.
